Pity Party has Passed, Productive Proliferation Permeates...

heh. p, p, p, promising :)

Well the reason these forums came into existence wasn't because there weren't any forums at kbkp (There aren't now, but the concern they would disappear also contributed to the genesis of HostBillForums.com), but rather, the sense that the community needed to have ownership of it's own community resources w/o restrictions being imposed on communications between each other, or other limitations that were being arbitrarily imposed at kbkp.

Then, the bootstrap. That went well, within a few days there were 25 HostBill users here, with more joining every single day.

Then, the pity party got up to full steam. We vented, and we shared, and we laughed and we lamented - together, much like a support group. We had a lot of frustration to get off of our chests, and we did.

Now, as that has for the most part died down, we're beginning to see the real support aspects of this site move into operation. That's great. That's why we all did this.

I figure there will always be those, "Look what kbkp is doing now" sort of conversations, but more importantly, now that we've all vented our grief and frustrations, we can get down to the business of helping each other support our own customer bases.

I'm very happy about this. I'm very glad to be here. Thanks to everyone here for helping each one of us through the pity party phase together, but more importantly, thanks for being here regardless, because we're all here running this software with a safety net now that truly stems from actual community spirit.

Well said. I don't intend on this forum being huge, but something for users to fall back on in the off chance they need community help. The community here thus far has been great, and I look forward to all the great conversations we'll have here.

That's just for SPAM protection against bots and such.

Because they didn't have an adequate system in place to protect themselves against, they took (IMO the wrong) extreme measures to combat SPAM over at the OMV forums that are so redneck that in order to make any sort of decent post you have to put in a few words, post, then edit that post, and paste in your real post.

And then they had these ridiculous character count limits too. I posted one tutorial there and had to get real creative (being my first post), posting my own SPAM that seemed to be legit posts, just to get to a number of posts where I could actually post BB Code and links, then I had to actually break the tutorial into the three pieces.

They apologized of course, once they realized they had lost someone who was going to contrib to the community, asking me for more, to which I politely said that I wasn't interested.

WHT has a policy that promotes SPAM too. A couple of them. They have these titles you get after so many (senseless one-liner) posts, so you get a lot of nonsense there. The other requirement they have for you to SPAM, is when you first join, you have to have so many posts before you can do something or other - Oh yeah, I think it's a signature.

That's what I call encouraging SPAM. WHT might not see it that way, but that's the environment they create as a result of their policies. So I obliged them when I joined (whenever that was). I even made the very last SPAM post obvious by calling it such and bringing attention to their policy that encouraged it.

The next day, I got a notification that I had a warning for that and the other earlier SPAM posts lol. but I had already made enough posts of substance to keep my sig and told that mod to go to hell - he still hates me, and I make fun of him whenever I get the chance to over there.

Not that I find much use to WHT, but it serves a purpose sometimes.
