I need IP addresses / blocks... /20 /22, somewhere in that range.

In about month (hopefully not sooner), I'm going to be needing more IP addressing space.

I was wondering what sources folks here are using for the acquisition of new addressing space and whether they had some pointers as to where I can go to buy, shop, or peruse for more.

I'm not considering going directly to ARIN for anything less than a /16, and would prolly not look toward them for that anyway.

They don't necessarily have to be along the same price point that I'm currently able to acquire them for, but that would, of course, be super.

Right now I can get as many as I want basically, starting at $0.65 ea and going down from there if I want more than a /20 at a time. But I'm really fed up with this rWHOIS crap, and it seems I have to train my current provider each time on how to delegate in-addr.arpa child zones to me in proper fashion.

Here's what I require:

  • SWIP to my ARIN OrgID / POC
Takes all the headaches out of this process, and automatically defaults to my AUTH servers for reverse DNS configured at ARIN.

  • LOA to me so I can announce the route, have one of my providers do it for me, or an equally and functionally agreeable method.

  • No so-called, "set up" fees

  • Standard, Monthly billing (I'm not opposed to reasonable term contracts, but monthly billing)
Your comments, suggestions, recommendations are most welcome :)

Finally, and on a different point: Lawrence, it may be time for another board here at HostBillForums.com, to accommodate other HostBill provider discussions not solely pertaining to HostBill itself. I'll leave that up to you to determine.

I'm sorry I can't help you in this area, but I can go off topic a tad just to respond to your request.

I'm open to it. One thing I'd like to avoid however are full blown advertisements where individuals advertise every product under the sun. (HostBill related I suppose being an exception)

A service request / offer board, I'm okay with it. Would you open up a suggestion in the suggestion boards so other users can provide feedback regarding this? Service offerings are rather a bit tricky and seeing how we're all providers here, I'd like to play it safe.

Still nothing. It's like, what? Everyone here has never had to pick up IPs before, or maybe those sources dried up?

I dunno, but I still need sources for IPs. Anyone else have any ideas other than going directly to ARIN and filling out a justification?

Or is it just too much to ask that someone SWIP and either announce, or let me announce myself over BGP?

I thought IPv4 address space was a hot topic.

Honestly, I think a lot of providers don't really understand how SWIPE works... and so they don't even realize they can sell their IP space.

I had to educate my DC provider about all this, and took me a few months to convince them to sell me a couple of IP blocks.  I pay $1 per IP.

Bradley, I believe IPv4 is one of the hottest topics.  So it's nice to see this discussion.

$0.81 per IP for us.  Though we buy in bulk for /26.  We upped the price per IP due to customers buying them and never using them like they were buying stock.  We had to even come out with a justification form just to authorize the purchases to ensure the ips aren't horded.

Electric, OVH?

where are you guys grabbing your IPs from? I was considering going right to ARIN for my next block purchase as I need to have ease of portability with providers and BGP since I'll only be adding more ISP's to the DC, but there's probably a cheaper alternative, I just haven't done too much looking as of late.

I saw a couple of "Brokerage" agencies - neither one of them ever responded and they had no prices listed.

depending upon when I need them, I may be willing to spend upwards of a dollar an IP if I'm in a bind, considering I'm letting them go for $1.50 each for extras. I typically give 1, 2, or 3, away for gratis depending on the grade of server I'm deploying for a client, but like Patrick pointed out, some folks seem to want to horde them, and one customer who picked up a /23 turned out to be a SPAMmer (They're legally adhering to the CAN-SPAM act, but still, a spades a spade IMNSHO).

Had I known that in advance I would have charged them $2.50 each and locked them into a year contract instead of 3 mos. When they're done I suspect I'm going to have to find some way to *cleanse* those IPs and I'll prolly still have customers complaining that that emails from their servers bounce because of the RBLs.

I don't know if Francisco's IP blocks out of Fremont California are still geo-reporting (and in ARIN's whois for those blocks) as Canada or not (I think he's a Canadian living in Fla and still running the main part of his frantech company out of HE's datacenter in Fremont, CA), but SWIP takes care of this and makes reverse DNS easy because it defaults to the reverse DNS servers you have listed in your Org's record at ARIN.

@Electric, @Patrick, if you could check and see if your upstreams are willing to allocate IPs to external companies, who can handle the BGP announcements themselves (if they're not wanting to do so), that would be a good thing.

I'm trying to gather resources for future buildouts, and as far as my own IPs I got twenty years ago from nic.ddn.mil under direct assignment,  I reserve them for use in my own infra and a few 'select' customers.
