How to stop fraudulent signups

We are getting hundreds of fraudulent customer signups with names like Free Meds and Porn sites etc.
None of the signups generate any orders, they just register as customers and stop at that. The majority of email addresses are invalid and welcome emails bounce which adds to the annoyance.

Have any of you encountered this and do you know of a way to stop it as the usual Maxmind fraud prevention we use doesn't work at the initial customer registration stage.

For the fraud module select the Reject Free and High Risk Emails option. Also make sure you have enabled the Image Verification field for client registration. If its showing up from only a few different domains add those to the block list.

Aah, thank you very much.

Adding image verification to the signup fields took care of that nicely.

We get some of this as well and it ends up with a manual check and banned IP.

We have not enabled the 'block free and high risk emails' as some new clients might only have hotmail.com/yahoo.co.uk to start off with.  This has made us think we have to keep this one to prevent missed business.

Anyone else have experience here or do most lock out free email accounts?
Kind regards,
