Surprisingly, auto update worked

Now when i say that, i mean it worked from 4.7.4 and a jump tp 4.9.4.  I've heard of many auto update horror stories and so i prepared for a major fail.  Prepared an immediate backup minutes prior and prepared to get errors.  To my surprise it upgraded all on it's own with no issues.  I was also a little worried since the install is now on a new server, so i figured server variables were a little different and auto update may fail due to that.

So it's weird that it works for some and others it doesn't.

Nevertheless, i like the IPAM update big time.  Still needs work but nevertheless, enjoying it.

From what I'm seeing, people who install Hostbill under a cp on a shared server don't seem to have autoupgrade issues. There's a couple of reasons I think:

  • FastCGI or suPHP is usually installed on machines used as shared hosting environments
  • On a dedicated machine (Like the now invisible *enterprise* version of HostBill?), using suPHP is not needed nor recommended (There's no use for it unless you are interested in slowing your webserver down)
  • According to kbkp HERE, "Auto-upgrade plugin will not work on DSO PHP handler (you will receive archive extract error)".

How is your HostBill installed? under root in a standalone server as a virtualhost container in /var/www? under a non-priv'd user in a virtualhost container under /home/username/htdocs? under cPanel on a shared server? Is Apache using FastCGi or suPHP or w/PHP as DSO? What are the chmod's?

I use FastCGI + 512 MB memory limit and it works for me without any problems.

Okay that's what is is for you then. You're using FastCGI.

The docs have been changed to say suPHP but FastCGI used to work and apparently still does :)

Yeah that used to work for me until the nagging by the autoupdate module about outdated cloudstack updates, I had to do a lot of clicking, and running cron, even restarted Apache, and for the life of me I still can't quite figure out how I got that notification to go away within 24 - 48hrs, which is usually how long it takes before it goes away on its own LOL.

Those errors reporting that I still need to apply plugin or patches for updates are, of course, following manual updates - since autoupgrade has always been broken and never worked for me.
