Help with Email Template

Dear All,

I am looking to add some email logic that only appears once the status of a ticket is set to Closed.

If the below worked, I would like something like this:  (sadly, this does not work!)

{if $ticket.closed}
This ticket is now closed.
{else}
Say this instead
{/if}

Anyone have any ideas on proper syntax?  Does a variable exist?
